Mike Swenson

Hi, Mike Swenson here with REL freedom, you know, this episode of our real freedom stories is gonna be a little bit different. So recently, we had an event called freedom con. And on there we had some wonderful guests that share their stories, and some of their tips and successes on their journey. In this particular episode, we're going to pick up with Devin Doherty, and Devin is going to share more about his story and his journey towards financial and time freedom. So we've got Devin Doherty Real Estate Group, founder of five doors network, Master practitioner for NLP. And I just have to share just a real quick, Devin story.

Mike Swenson

So the first time I actually met Devin face to face was back on a bus when we were doing hurricane relief, Texas and he was on my bus. And I was like, I obviously had heard who he was. And I was like, This guy is a genius. The way that you guide a conversation was just unbelievable. So the first time was just sitting in the back of the bus just being really impressed with Devin and and how he talks to people how he guides conversations, and obviously just the background you have with with NLP and coaching and all that is is phenomenal. So founder of the thrive network real estate coach, if you want to just kind of the little teaser that people probably curious to learn more about is how you got recruited to IBM at the age of 14. You know, if you want to touch on that for a second, I know people hear that, but But yeah, go ahead, Devin. Take it away. And just, fill our minds with all your wisdom here for this next half hour.

Devin Doherty

Well, thank you. Yeah, so just really quickly, I would say that I put my TV behind me here cuz I'm going to show you something. So it might the fastest way for you to show my freedom lifestyle is just to show you my photo role. So I'm going to show that. But to answer your question about the IBM situation, I was part of a program very early on where my mom and dad invested in me heavily. And they saw that I loved computers. And they literally broke the piggy bank to me the necessary resources of both training and technology. And I science fair, in young as a young person in like sixth grade and building a computer. And then I started mentoring. He talked about mentoring. I have brother George to thank, God rest his soul, who was a mentor at from second grade, sixth grade, and really educated me on the ways of what computers were all about.

Devin Doherty

And he also had a something called strategy club, where we would we would reenact World War events. And we would play them in in these different pieces on a on a map. And it was a really this is St. Louise de marillac in Chicago, Illinois. So I was very blessed to have my parents as amazing mentors who pushed me into a mentoring relationship to continue on the theme of what we heard all along. And from there, I just found more mentors when I moved to California in 1979. More than 40 years ago, I was between sixth and seventh grade and found a math teacher who is starting a computer lab at Michigan High School and part of that is they needed students to be certified. And so I got plugged into a summer program where I got to go to IBM executive management school and learn from a gentleman by the name of Lou Mobley something called the Mobley matrix which is how to look at return on assets.

Devin Doherty

So as a as a 12, 13, 14 year old I'm into the business world My first career was in technology and worked with Ellen business land and a number of other large people in that way and then I was recruited from that to KPMG peat Marwick and so as a teenager, I was literally senior manner with 40 employees underneath and a large internetworking business this is all prior to prior to the internet. This is a really interesting background. My photo roll let me get to that real quick. This is this is prior to COVID everybody loves remembering COVID this was here at Big Sky Montana one of my very good buddies Palin. And this was just an amazing trip. And then I'm just going to flip through that that's big sky Montana. I'm an I'm an extreme skier.

Devin Doherty

So I'm a skier and a snowboarder both and love I love all that stuff. And then I also just going to flip through here here's pictures of my kids. There's my daughter Reagan with our two pups there in the room. So if you hear some barking, it's because somebody knocked on the doors and just know that I'm just absolutely fine. This was a cabo trick back in August and then we just got back from another Cabo trip in between Canada. Been to Moab Colorado. This is a this is an extreme RCR tour that we in Moab. And you know, here we are jet skiing in Cabo. And then of course we love doing that. here's here's surfing, the moment we get home, we go back to the beach and go surfing. So that's kind of my lifestyle is is just enjoying my teenagers. That's my 18 year old daughter, a 13 year old son. That's my wife, Judy and my daughter, this was just that was celebrating my birthday just a couple of days ago.

Devin Doherty

So just very, very blessed family that I can invest in and spend time with. And, that's really what it's all about about it. And you know, from a freedom perspective. This conversation is so important, you guys, because knowing what freedom is for you is a very, very important conversation. I'm going to grab my iPad, I'm a doodler. So I'm going to take my iPad here and doodle some things real quickly. Because what I want is I want to lay some graph for you about what is so important with this dialogue quickly and then and then I want to take that and tie that into this other part of the conversation I want to talk to you about something I learned through a gentleman by the name of David David McElhaney, David McElhaney wrote a book called intention kisi.

Devin Doherty

And what he basically taught me was that that we actually have to net worth statements, we have our tangible net worth. And then we have our intangible net worth and tangible and intangible and but your tangible net worth is something that we get lost in a little bit, because it's a tangible net worth as we look at houses, and cars. And then we look at debt on the other side of the 10 of the tangible net worth right. But the intangible net worth is the these are the assets and the liability life that we pass on generationally.

Devin Doherty

And then I want to challenge you about freedom is that freedom is actually the ability to pass on more effective strategies you were and it's not good or bad, not judging our parents not judging our grandparents. But just the concept of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, we all have effective and less effective examples in the world, right. And so, what we want to do is you want to look at the assets that we would choose to pass on intangible assets. So one intangible asset, that asset to consider be flexibility and communication, highly flexible communicators control the conversation, inflexible communicators usually fall into the category of judgment. judgers are louder absolutely one way or the other. And now is a really good time to test this when you're talking to your friends and family. And you can see that they are definitely Democrat, or they're definitely Republican, and they don't have any room or flexibility at all to understand the difference, because everybody's got to check a box on that form.

Devin Doherty

But at some level, what would you want? What from a freedom perspective, what you would want to be able to do is to give people the ability to see the gray in between? Do you see that because if you if you can only see one or the other, then you're not really seeing all the colors in the opportunity. So you can move that liability into an asset on the intangible side. And guess what, as your liabilities, you actually can increase your tangible assets as well. And that's the thing that I want to really want to challenge you guys to consider in all of this is that tangible assets actually come from all the input assets that you heard everybody talking about so far. And what I would tell you is that you heard you heard one of the assets that Veronica had was whatever it takes, right? I will, until and the I will until addigy, I will until my asset is what causes people to be able to build tangible assets.

Devin Doherty

Now, what happens in the middle of that, though, is that there's something that happens called baggage. And baggage is basically something that causes us to loop causes us to experience the same thing over and over. Mike, it's so funny, you bring up the bus trip, because we were dealing with some baggage on that trip ever. If you remember, there was the bus and the front of you're having a really healthy conversation. But people were struggling with their reality model. And our reality model is whatever we think it is, right. And if we don't put good things in, we can get stuck. So one of the things I'm going to talk about baggage but I want to I want to lay a foundation with you about state.

Devin Doherty

And in state, what I want you to understand is that there's basically only two states there's there's a positive state and a negative state. draw a triangle here because you guys are probably familiar with this triangle is called the drama triangle. And in the drama triangle at the bottom of the drama triangle, there's a victim. A victim is up is an effect. And when they're at effect, they're in a negative state neg negative state. Okay, so how does this relate to freedom? You can't get it if you are in that place. Pretty simple. So what we know to avoid is being a victim being an effect or being negative. So what's the opposite, the opposite is to is to be a person, that's that cause to be a cause means that you know, you own war right now. I think one of the mantras that is so important for us to understand, and I'm attempting to pass this mantra on to those beautiful children, is that I am perfectly receiving the results that I currently am getting because of the actions that did in the past, right?

Devin Doherty

Because at the end of the day, whatever we have is what we have. And so if we're not, if we're not a cause, in that statement, if we say if it wasn't for COVID. Anybody say that, besides me? If it wasn't for COVID, blah, blah, blah, then what's going to happen is that you're going to be stuck in that situation. Does that make sense? So here's what I want you to do is I want you to let it go. And that's where baggage, that's where the baggage release comes in. But in order for you to move into cars, what we really have to do is we have to look at what is a positive mindset. And a positive mindset comes from different aspects, positive mindsets come from being in what I would call beautiful state.

Devin Doherty

And a beautiful state is what we're talking about a beautiful state, for instance, what I want you to just feel the energy as I play this song for just a couple of seconds, I just want you guys to hear the shift in the energy in your mind, music has an impact on our ability to see our state. And what happens is state can be triggered by things on the outside. Now I hope to trigger your state into a beautiful state by positive music, right music that affects you positively. Now you could also hear that song that makes you fall into tears. And it's a big, big factor in all these things. Right. So then the other option, the other side of beautiful state is what I would call a suffering state. And a suffering state is where someone else is dealing with the issue. Now if you're a victim, then the only other place that you can, that you can find other help for that is to find an enabler to find somebody who will help you, which by the way, that could be the media that could be that could be your friends and family.

Devin Doherty

It could be the circle that's less that is affecting you. It could be the bottle, it could be this, it could be anything that causes you to be able to stay in this negative state. And the thing that I would just challenge us to consider whether I was speaking to my kid, whether I'm speaking to my partners, what whomever I'm speaking to, it's how long do you want to stay in that state. And the towards freedom if you're focused towards freedom, staying in this state will cost you days, weeks, months and years, I was just talking to a friend on this topic. And we were looking at this, we were looking at this model, if you're if you look at a graph, and you look at the value of time, let's call it this just sets $1 value. And then you look at your children at age zero to age 18, to age 28.

Devin Doherty

What's interesting is that a lot of parents value their time with their children greater here than they do at zero, the graph looks like this, they value their time to older, when in reality, it's actually quite important at a younger age for a person and who knows, maybe it starts here and it just stays the same in your world. Or maybe it goes like this point is is that you get to choose the value of the relationship you have with your children. And if you hire an hour of their time, it would Wouldn't it be harder to buy it at 18 because they're free, they get to do what they want, it's harder to buy it. Just because you control their minutes doesn't necessarily mean that we invest in their minutes the same way we could. We sometimes often do things on the side, when we could be investing in our younger children.

Devin Doherty

By the way, we take the words younger children and apply that to new new mentees, new partners, new people in business, what happens is the zero to 18 route is just like any relationship relationships are either growing or dying. And what we have to consider is the value of the time invested early on has to be high. And when when when it is high, then what can happen is we can help people stay in that positive, beautiful state. And when they stay in that positive, beautiful state. What that does is it's triangle because there's no persecutors out there, because we're only looking at opportunities. Does that make sense? So now what I want you to do is I want you to take this triangle this this conversation, if you will, at towards the biggest challenge that you have. Right now as it relates to freedom, the one the great equalizer is that we all have 24 hours in a day, right?

Devin Doherty

So when you look at my my photo role over the last couple of weeks, I've been on lots of vacations. Now, my inner circle knows that I'm available even while I'm on vacations if I want to be, and I do, you often want to be because I get to live a lifestyle, that's mostly vacation. So the point is, is that that 24 hour clock is one tool for you to know whether you have freedom or not. And as David was mentioning, you could have a lot of money coming in passively. So live on whatever live, you're balancing things out. You know, the thing that I learned early on, and you go back to my background of investing, is that we learned that when our passive income is greater than our expenses, then we actually won the game, passive income is greater than your expenses, you no longer have money problems. But your passive income can only come from various sources, because it has to be truly passive.

Devin Doherty

The way that you know if it's passive or not, is can you take six months off, and it still stay the same or grow. If it's not true, what we have a tendency to do you guys, as we have a tendency to call passive income, passive, even though it's not. And that's a dangerous and slippery slope, business ownership that requires your attention is not passive. A paycheck that comes in the mail from a rental, for instance, we own properties that we own, that we leased the the ground, we own the ground, and there's somebody that builds on top, they send us a check that's truly passive. Does that make sense? And so what I want you to know is that passive income, where you can walk away from it, that's truly the the game. But to figure that out, you also have to manage the expense side of it.

Devin Doherty

So if you go back to tangible and intangible, right, tangible and intangible is about building a balance sheet, where you're your liabilities are low, and your assets are high, but they have to produce cash flow. And that fills your income statement. That's what you still need to do. You still got to manage the expense side. And guess what we teach in real estate, we teach to go get the big car, because that's gonna get get us clients, supposedly, we teach to go get all the fancy, whatever's right. And all of that stuff drives the ability for you to have to have more income here in Southern California, we just call it broke at a high level. Because so many people are driving around vehicles that they can't afford, impressing friends that they can't actually live near. And it's a cycle that just goes over and over again.

Devin Doherty

So to break this down has to look like your ability to drive down expenses, and drive up assets. Physical, that's the tangible side, the intangible side, let's get back to baggage. tangible side is how do we remove baggage that's been limiting us. Now baggage can can be there. It can be there from past life events, it can be there from childhood, it can even be passed on Genia logically from your grandparents or your parents from the way that they lived. It's proven. As a matter of fact, there's studies that show that it's proven that this is that this is happening even in non humans and animals. But to remove the baggage simply means to identify the triggers.

Devin Doherty

So what's causing you to fall into this net eight trigger, something happened that triggers you, that could be wife, that could be husband, that could be kids, it could be the the the fact that the checkbook says there's no money in it, it could be any number of these triggers, right. And so we have to do is we have to identify the triggers. And then we need to identify emotions related to the triggers. In the brain, what happens at the unconscious level is that these emotions are what trigger you. So you feel sad, angry, hurt, shame, guilt, fear, all that stuff is tied to the baggage, once we remove identify the emotion, then we can also remove the baggage, which means we can move forward.

Devin Doherty

So if you're stuck, if you're stuck with baggage, that is a choosing By the way, but we also have strategies to help you help you eliminate that. And one of the ways to simply do that is identify what the emotion is and let it go. You know, it's the Elsa song all the way right? You guys know Elsa gonna sing that, nor am I gonna ask Google to sing it for us. But the point is, is that you have this you have this ability. So I'm gonna take a deep breath. And I'd love to see if you get feedback for me either on text chat there, or if the panelists want to jump in first station. Tell me what you're getting from this and let's go deeper.

Mike Swenson

It's so much deeper level. This is this is really thick stuff. So I think, what you go back to is you go back to the source here, right where a lot At times, you know, we just say like, Oh, you know, choose your path and decide that, but what you're talking about is so much further upstream than that, that's going to impact your your thought pattern in your decisions, you really have to go back up to the beginning of the river, right? because everything's going to flow.

Devin Doherty

To go further on that, Mike, thank you further on that is that sometimes we don't know what that is. If you look at some of our baggage, it's like a spaghetti, a piece of spaghetti. And we don't know where the beginning is to start pulling the thread through, right. It's like a ball of yarn that's tied up. And you just don't know where the beginning is. But you know, you just keep hitting trigger trigger trigger, and you fall into that less than beautiful state. And then you say, Well, I can't get to freedom. Because anytime you're looking at a blocker, or a or any kind of bear, it's usually baggage. But it's baggage towards an outcome that you're choosing for yourself.

Devin Doherty

Oftentimes, you guys will hear me talking about the unconscious minds ability to receive 2 million signals per second. If you remember the movie, the matrix, seeing the falling down the screen in the matrix, imagine grabbing only 128 of those dots, or pixels, or toothpicks, if you will, per second. That's what the conscious mind is filtering out. It's about filtering out only 128 of 2 million potentials. And you get to choose what you're filtering based on how you're showing up. And how you're showing up is directly affecting how you're going to get freedom. So the freedom that you're choosing for yourself right now you deserve whatever it is. And now let's move forward. Okay. And then there's also possibly a forgiveness loop that's necessary.

Devin Doherty

So we can throw in the concept of forgiveness, because basically, what what happens is that you can remove the baggage, but if you still have unforgiveness, the ability, when I say let it go, that let it go means to forgive. And to forgive means to truly be at a place where you are clear with yourself, where you're connected to the outcome of what you're receiving right now where you can stand in your two feet and feel grounded in knowing who you are. That's really, really important point.

Mike Swenson

I was just gonna chime in for a second here and just kind of clarify. So, you know, one thing that I think a lot of people are probably thinking about in terms of freedom is, it's not possible, or, I'm not worthy of it to the point that I really wanted to, like, we put some limitations on that, like, it would be really nice to have this. And yet, either I'm not worthy of that, or I really don't think it's possible. So I'm going to settle for this.

Devin Doherty

You just hit on the biggest topic of all of our lives, okay. And that's what we call the Dirty Dozen, the Dirty Dozen are things like I'm not be, I'm not lovable, I can't have success. My You know, this is just the way we are those limiters, they're actually seeds that are tied into every way that we interact through our entire lives, we literally go around in those 128 bits that we're collecting, and find every single time every single second of every single day, because we choose for that. So what happens is when you do see the thought of that big thought of glue called a greater problem, when you see that bigger picture, then you have to identify it, is that something you want to continue associated with or not? And if it's not, then we can show you a path to go and to let it go as this bond from that.

Devin Doherty

By then what happens is it's not a miracle you heard. Brian, you heard Veronica hard ways off hw PA, right? Hard work pays off happens is that if we look at the the the the cycle of point fire, which is your programming leads to your thoughts, your thoughts lead to your feelings, your feelings, they do your actions and your actions lead to results. If we look at that cycle, what's happening is, Hark is action. Right? So you insert yourself at action. And the chart goes both directions as you can as you work, you actually feel better. And then that changes your thoughts which changes your programming, but it goes both directions, you can also change your thoughts or change your feelings or change your actions. A

Devin Doherty

nd so this is a really really important conversation but at the at the at the basis of that there's a loop and that loop is hard work didn't work for me. Look at where I am, right but remember where did that conversation come from? That came from the victim perspective in the negative mind of suffering state. So if you want to stay there, go for it. A lot of people do. That's what we call the 12 ounce curls for right that's what Sunday football is all about get to watch millionaires making money while we sit on the couch broke. You know, it's an interesting, interesting world that we live in.

Mike Swenson

Well, into just thinking about, you know, because I had recently read again, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, how what you were taught about money really impacts you so money doesn't grow on trees. We can't afford that right now, like, you tend to have a sense where you're thinking about money in a negative way. Like, it's this unattainable thing. Sometimes when I have to check myself with kids, because they asked me sometimes like, they want unlimited toys, they want unlimited things.

Mike Swenson

So sometimes they'll ask me like, Dad, can we afford that? And I have to think about how I frame that back to them, because I want them to believe that money is an abundant resource that there is plenty of money out there. And that it's not this, this thing that we have to just hide under a mattress, and it's this limiting resource. And so I have to always check myself, how do I respond back to him in that moment? Because, yes, we technically could afford the toy that they want. And yet, how do I phrase it in a way where it's going to impact us future thoughts about money? Because I'm really conscious of that now, having just read read that.

Devin Doherty

Yeah, that's huge. And, by the way, getting your kit, you talk about the intangible assets that you want to pass along, right, they have to see the patterns in your life. And when you if at some point in the interview my kids and see see if this is actually rubbing off. And I think what you'll find is, some is and some isn't. And so we got to do, we got to work harder to show more examples. And remember, they only they only duplicate what you do, not what you say you talk about be do have, when it comes idea of what you're trying to pass on, they're only going to they're only going to duplicate what you do effectively. And what I would just tell you is that as is the is the answer to that and can be any number of answers.

Devin Doherty

And if it's an answer less than fully position in for an empowered way, then it's going to affect them negatively and how it probably has since birth. So the answer is, yeah, we can afford it. Let's show you how. Right and and the fact of the fact is that, you know, while I'm not well just anybody is has arrived anywhere. What we're really trying to do here is you're trying to pass on intangible assets to the next generation, the tangible you heard, you heard David say, and I would agree with him give kids money, giving your kids stuff is a really ineffective pattern to show them how to be broke, to show them the how not to have a freedom mindset.

Devin Doherty

My kids who are in the middle of all of the things that they're doing entrepreneurially as well as in is they know the value of hard work, they know that focusing on the right things, but they know it because the fact is that mom and dad did that we actually were pretty quote, close, semi retired, traveled around the country twice in our RV, somewhere in our 20s. Because we had built passive income from real estate. And we'd also have multi level marketing business as well. And and at the end of the day, though, what I would say is that that drove us to go get jobs, we said Holy cow, our kids wonder how the mailbox money comes in.

Devin Doherty

So we went and became residential real estate agents just so that our kids would know how to do it. And then they've been going houses and things like that, to show us how to make all that happened. So we can show them how to how the actual money is really made. It's a very, very demonstratable process, if you want it to be. This is a really fun conversation. You guys love to hear some more feedback from anybody in the audience panelists, that kind of thing.

Mike Swenson

One thing that you that it's a really big aha, that just happened for me. So we're all we're all going to experience this together, I guess. You know, when you outline the passive income is greater than the expenses, you win the freedom game, right? So my big aha there to bigger aha is, if I'm happy with my life the way it is right now, if I want to experience true freedom, I just have to get to that point where passive income is covering those expenses. What I like, more effectively, that that you showed is okay, that's your that's your that's your winning formula.

Mike Swenson

But what's more important, is that's great that that's the formula but not what's how do we how do we solve the equation and you just hit the nail on the head, which is starting with your mindset. So if I'm not happy, having true freedom, just living the life the way I want, if I want more from my life, then I need to quantify that. But more importantly, I need to start doing the actions and building the mind frame and the mindset to get to where I want to be. So what does that look look like? So it's it's chunking down.

I will I will tell you, I'm going to write down a few examples of things that we do that we encourage and I would recommend that you do and that is that you want to read at least 10 pages a day and my preferred time to do that is at bedtime, because what happened positivity in there and let it marinate. Now I'm talking about pm positive mental attitude type books, I'm talking about things that will stretch your mind stuff like brights as good stuff. Technical is for a different time. It's not bedtime stuff. But with your kids and whatnot, that is a really good way to bring a mentor directly into your bed.

Now, quite honestly, sometimes I find myself hand up and read because I'm too tired. And I'll fall asleep. If If I try and read quote in bed. But if I can invest in one step, that is the fastest way for me to rid myself of some of the negative loops in my life. Because there is a concept inside of there that says, up until now I was thinking one way and from now on, I'm thinking another way. And then the second thing is to change your associations is to change who you hang out with. And to do that is to literally be in conversations like this. But it's to go more practical and physical in whatever way you need to do that to create accountability. And the biggest thing that I recommend there is to hire a coach.

Devin Doherty

And that is a person that is sitting above you as a drone in your life, looking down at what you say you want, and helping you hold yourself accountable to that. Now that could be a business partner, that could be a friend. But remember, eight on unpaid, she goes up like an unpaid football player on the football team when they want to. So just just know that that that's less effective. I'm not saying you need to pay a coach or not pay coach, I'm just simply saying hire a coach that's effective towards where you want to go. Those are three things that I would highly recommend that you consider as you're looking at how do I really move this to the next level? Anything last? Are we wrapping?

Devin, there is a quick question from Edward. What are some examples of what you are reading before bed, like answer in like 30 seconds or less?

Devin Doherty

Norman Vincent Peale is an example, Og Mandino, I'm giving you author names. There's they all have multiple multiple books, Thinking Grow Rich, great book, anything that's going to give you the power of positive thinking beyond what you may get through any spiritual connotation. If you're not reading the Bible, and you're a Christian, then obviously read that type of material as well. But for the evening, pouring unconscious mind giving yourself the ability to lift yourself. It's positive mental attitude books, from the best authors.

Devin Doherty

And I'm talking about the like, there's a book called The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz, how to have confidence and power and dealing with people by Les Gibson. These are books that are going to help you break through in areas where you need to break through. There's a recent one that came out called, You're a Badass, that's a great book. All those kinds of books, invest in the evening, even if you can only set it at five pages or five pages a night, start somewhere and just get through that idea. If you if you got to start with one page, it's okay. So all of those things are really, really important. So thank you guys.
